God knows that on our own we are incapable and undeserving of Him. Romans 6:6 says that, ". . . while we were powerless, Christ died for the ungodly." Someone had to pay the penalty for our sins. That someone was Jesus Christ. 1 John 4:10 says that that, ". . . He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." Basically the Good News of the Gospel in a nutshell is this: Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our many sins against God. Somehow, when Jesus died on the cross, God poured out the penalty of our sins on Him. As a result, for those who will repent of their sins and "receive Him" (John 1:12) God forgives them and allows them to come into right standing with Him. Not only does God forgive a person's past but He goes one amazing step further. He replaces the person's old, dead, sinful spirit with a brand new spirit. |
