Romans 8:8 says "Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God." If our nature is one of selfishness and sin then there is nothing we can do on our own to become in right standing with God. One, because our very nature is sinful, if left to our own devices we would never choose God or the ways of God. Two, even if we would choose God, by our own power we have no means of reaching Him. We cannot change ourselves into godly people. Three, even if we could change ourselves we could not grant ourselves forgiveness for our prior sins. Forgiveness can only come from the one who was sinned against. Only God can forgive our sins and wipe out our past. So, not only are we sinners who are deserving eternal separation from God but unless God moves on our behalf we have no hope of ever being any different.
